Gregory L. Adams BS, NREMT-P

Greg Adams is currently the Associate Director, Emergency Medical Education at MedicAlert Foundation. He is responsible for training first responders , EMTâs, paramedics, fire fighters, police, nurses and physicians - across the US on MedicAlertâs services and capabilities, such as its 24 hour emergency call center that specializes in providing vital information to help save patients lives. The training helps emergency responders improve and expedite treatment for MedicAlert members.

Greg started his EMS career as a volunteer firefighter in 1980 then joined the US Army (as a medic) in 1981. He has held various training and leadership positions in the Army including 3 years as the Program Director for Combat Lifesaver Course for the 1st of the 184th Infantry Battalion where he trained over 300 infantry soldiers life-saving skills used in Iraq and Afghanistan. During Gregâs 25 years working on an ambulance, he has been a Field Training Officer and Public Relations Officer. He has written training materials for nurses on the subject of interactions with EMS in long term care facilities and he has written articles for a national EMS magazine emphasizing the importance of emergency medical identification.

As a certified instructor for CPR, First Aid, Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Greg currently volunteers his time training basic level US Air Force EMTs.

Greg has a Bachelorâs Degree in Health Science and has held his National Registry Paramedic Certification since 1998. He is a member of the National Association of Emergency Medical Services Educators as well as the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians.

The Teenager Who Launched an International Foundation: The MedicAlert Story

Rarely can children and teenagers avoid some kind of injury, cuts or bruises during the carefree days of summer vacation. In the summer of 1953 in Turlock, Calif., teenager Linda Collins was no exception. With her parents away on vacation, Linda managed to cut her finger badly enough to require a trip to the local hospital.

Lindaâs family members were no strangers in the local medical community. In fact, they were a staple. Lindaâs father, Dr. Marion Collins, was a physician and surgeon in the town. To get treatment for her injury, Linda was taken to Turlockâs Lillian Collins Hospital, an institution founded by her grandfather. There, she was treated by her uncle, Dr. James Collins.

Even for this knowledgeable medical family, what should have been a routine procedure to treat Lindaâs cut turned into a medical nightmare. Following standard protocol, Lindaâs uncle performed a skin test before injecting Linda with a full dose of tetanus antitoxin which contained horse serum. Within moments, Linda went into anaphylactic shock â a severe and potentially fatal allergic reaction.

The incident nearly killed her. Linda spent several days in an oxygen tent fighting for her life. Bolstered by the strength of her youth she was able to survive the trauma. Linda could return to a normal life, but she and her parents both felt there was a lesson to be learned.

âMy parents realized that if one tiny drop of the antitoxin had produced that reaction Iâd probably be killed by a full dose,â she recalled. âThereafter, when I went away from home for a weekend or to a neighboring town for school events, theyâd attach a note to my coat or make me a paper bracelet describing my allergies.â

Linda gained a reputation around Turlock for her medical tagging. Everyone in the small town had heard her story. But, it wasnât until Linda was accepted to Stanford that she and her parents decided to create a more permanent indicator of her medical allergy.

Refusing to be tattooed or to wear a dog tag, as her father suggested, Linda came up with the concept of a silver bracelet with âAllergic to Tetanus Antitoxinâ engraved on the back. Dr. Collins added âMedicAlertâ and the symbol of the medical profession to the front. The design was sent to a local San Francisco jeweler. Days later the first MedicAlert bracelet was created.

Walking around campus, Linda was frequently asked about the unique piece of jewelry on her wrist. Many people asked how they could get one for themselves or a loved one. She told her parents of the interest, and together they decided that their concept needed to be shared.

Dr. Collins launched a campaign to turn his daughterâs jewelry concept into a national phenomenon with a strictly philanthropic model in mind. âWe are not here to make money. We are here to save lives,â he frequently stated.

In 1956, Dr. Collins established the MedicAlert Foundation International, a nonprofit organization. In the more than 50 years since its creation, the foundation has grown from a family-run organization, headquartered in the Collins family living room, to a global entity with offices in ten countries and 4 million members worldwide.

Over the years, the foundation has protected the lives of millions of people all because of one teenagerâs accident, allergic reaction and desire to help others like herself in times of need.

MedicAlert Foundation International 2323 Colorado Avenue Turlock, CA 95382 888-633-4298
"http://www.medicalert.org" www.medicalert.org

#61 FDA Petition

On this week's show, we welcome Kelly Close and Amy Tenderich. Kelly and Amy, along with Manny Hernandez, founder of TuDiabetes.com and with the support of many other leaders in the Diabetes community, are conducting a petition drive to the FDA.

We fear that innovation is slowing in Diabetes, despite the urgent need for new treatments. Today, close to half of the 24 million Americans with Diabetes do not meet recommended blood sugar goals.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's job is to protect the safety of patients and approve innovative medicines.

We are asking the new FDA leadership for two things:
1. To create a council of Diabetes patients and health care professionals who can help the FDA assess new information and assimilate diverse opinions, including those of patients.
2. To make the rules reasonable for the sake of the patients, which can be done without sacrificing safety.

http://www.helpthefda.org/

Please note: This petition is sponsored by a group of concerned patients, doctors and Diabetes educators, not the drug industry.

#60 Dr. Cohen's New Hippocratic Diet Guide

Irving A. Cohen, MD, MPH

Author of the new book,

Dr. Cohen's New Hippocratic Diet Guide
"How to Lose Weight Naturally and Beat the Obesity Epidemic"

Dr. Cohen is a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine. He obtained his post-graduate training in Preventive Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University where he served as the Chief Resident of
Preventive Medicine in the Bloomberg School of Public health.

He has served both in government and private practice. He currently directs two natural weight-loss programs in Kansas and holds a faculty appointment in the History of Medicine at the University of Kansas
School of Medicine.

On today's show, Irving A. Cohen, MD, MPH, a recognized expert in disease prevention, will offer information about a highly effective way to diet.

According to the government, two out of three adults are overweight and most of them will make some attempt to lose weight this year. Unfortunately, most will fail and end up blaming themselves. Yet, the reason they will fail is not because they are either weak-willed or lazy. It is because the commonly accepted diet advice pushed by the government is wrong and is largely to blame for the current obesity epidemic. Before the government started handing out bad advice, only about one out of seven American adults was overweight. Since the Federal government has succeeded in getting people to believe this wrong advice, two out of three people are now overweight.

Dr. Cohen discusses how a natural diet, avoiding certain additives, and proportioning the right types of food, allows a dieter to lose weight without feeling constantly hungry. He explains how this can benefit people already suffering from hypertension, diabetes, arthritis and other diseases. He also discusses how many of these diseases can be prevented by avoiding certain additives and processed foods. He explains the connection between this modern diet and ancient weight-loss recommendations.

His book may be obtained at:

1-800-247-6533
or at
http://www.hippocraticdiet.com/

Low T and the Big D

There is a very high prevalence of low testosterone (T) among men with Diabetes. Since the relationship between low T and Diabetes is quite involved, Dr. Morgentaler explains, in clear terms, whatâs important for you to know in order to ensure good health.

In one revealing study, patients were asked to provide their entire medical histories, and then underwent a blood test for testosterone. Approximately 50% of men with Diabetes had low T, and the overall risk of low T in this population was more than double the risk seen in men without Diabetes.

In another fascinating study, individuals gave blood samples, which were frozen, and these individuals were then followed for many years. At the end of the study, the researchers tested the frozen blood samples to determine whether hormone levels like testosterone predicted the development of medical conditions such as Diabetes. Men with the lowest 25% of T concentrations in the study population were at increased risk of developing Diabetes. In other words, having low T increased the probability of being diagnosed with Diabetes sometime later in life. The risk was also increased for development of metabolic syndrome, a group of items (including Diabetes) that predicts subsequent risk of heart attack and stroke.

There is more to this story that suggests that normalizing T in men, with T therapy, helps control Diabetes. And, T therapy also happens to increase muscle mass and lowers body fat, and both of these changes are helpful with blood sugar control!

On today's show you will learn...

What is low testosterone?

What is it's connection with Diabetes?

What percentage of men with Diabetes have low T?

Does having low T also mean you will develop Diabetes?

How would a man know if he has low T?

What are the symptoms?

What should a man with Diabetes and low T do?

How well recognized is this connection between low T and Diabetes?

What are the treatments for low T?

What are the risks/is it safe?

Does T therapy help with blood sugar metabolism?

How else does T therapy help control Diabetes?

#56 Team Type 1

Racing to Cure Diabetes...

Phil Southerland, co-founder of Team Type 1, which was created in 2004 to inspire people living with Diabetes to take a proactive approach to managing their health and overcoming the obstacles often associated with the condition.

For the better part of his lifetime, Phil Southerland has made a habit of defying the odds.

When he was seven months old, he came down with what doctors first diagnosed as a routine case of baby flu. But after losing more than half of his body weight to the illness, his mother Joanna suspected something far more serious was wrong.

Violently ill and with perhaps only days to live, doctors diagnosed Southerland with Juvenile Diabetes. They told his mother that the condition would likely cost him his eyesight by the time he was 20.

Those doctors should see him now.

Only 26 years old, Southerland already counts among his achievements the founding of Team Type 1 â the worldâs first professional cycling team dedicated to raising awareness for Type 1 Diabetes â and a pair of victories for the team in the Race Across America (RAAM). His accomplishments and desire to help others with Diabetes have led to dozens of national engagements as a motivational speaker.

Cycling is his first love, though. A competitor since the age of 13, he co-founded Team Type 1 in 2005 with Joe Eldridge after the two met while racing against each other in college. Their intent â to create a cycling team made up solely of athletes with Type 1 Diabetes â first raced RAAM in 2006. The result was a victory in their division and the second fastest overall crossing, completing the more than 3,000-mile race in 5 days, 16 hours and 4 minutes. Last year, Team Type 1 did it again, winning its RAAM division while completing the transcontinental race faster than anyone else: 5 days, 15 hours and 43 minutes.

Southerland says living with Type 1 Diabetes allows him to be âthe CEOâ of his own body, while creating a long-term plan for success. âI have met some amazing people because I have diabetes,â he says. His long-term goals include getting Team Type 1 a spot in the Tour de France by 2012 and an entire Team of Type 1 pro cyclists in the Tour not long thereafter.
Ever the visionary, Phil would like to âsee a group health insurance plan for people with Diabetes, so we can all have the tools necessary to prevent complications.â

#42 The 30-Day Diabetes Miracle

Stuart A. Seale, M.D., board-certified family physician and co-author of The 30-Day Diabetes Miracle, has helped thousands of patients over the past quarter century.

While managing a thriving solo family practice in Springfield, Missouri for 21 years, he treated an increasing number of patients who suffered from lifestyle-related diseases. This moved him to learn more about treating the cause of these conditions, not just how to control the symptoms, as is the case with standard medical treatments.

He now serves as the medical director for Ardmore Institute of Health, and is the medical director, physician, and educator for Lifestyle Center of Americaâs Stopping Diabetes ProgramTM in Sedona, Arizona. He conducts an advanced wellness and healthy lifestyle workshop called The Well ExperienceTM. Dr. Seale also maintains a private, mobile medical practice, Room Calls Sedona.

Dr. Seale educates and motivates patients into improved health by treating the underlying cause of their diseases â an unhealthy lifestyle. He has expertise in nutrition, exercise physiology, and chronic disease prevention and reversal via lifestyle modification.

Dr. Seale graduated from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1979 and completed a family practice residency at the University of Missouri in 1983. Since that time, he has continuously maintained certification by the American Board of Family Practice, most recently re-certifying in 2007. He has also received the 3-year AMA Physician Recognition Award eight times, most recently in 2007.

The Lincoln, Nebraska native, age 53, spent most of his youth in Brainerd, Minnesota. Dr. Seale and his wife now reside in Sedona, Arizona. He has three adult children.

www.DiabetesMiracle.org
www.LifeStyleCenter.org
